Description
In nature, manganese dioxide is present as mineral pyrolusite (soft manganese ore).
It is a brown-black powder, which is practically insoluble in water. Even with cold sulfuric or nitric acid, no reaction takes place.
One of the essential, classic applications is the alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries (primary and / or dry cell batteries).
As one catalytic action, manganese dioxide reacts with hydrogen peroxide, releasing or producing oxygen.
There are also numerous uses as oxidizing agents, e.g. in organic synthesis, as a component in sealants or even in pyrotechnics.
Added to this are the glass, enamel and ceramics industries.
